How local businesses show up in AI answers

The question "Which electrician, tax advisor or restaurant near me is recommendable?" landed in Google search for years. Today it increasingly lands in ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews — and the answer isn't a directory of ten links, but a short recommendation with two or three specific names. For local businesses this shifts the rules: either the AI names you, or it names the competitor around the corner.

Local search moves into AI

Unlike classic map search, an AI answer doesn't deliver a complete list, but a pre-selection. It decides itself which two to five businesses it considers fitting and trustworthy — drawing on what it finds online about each. If clear signals are missing, the business drops out of the pre-selection before the customer ever sees it.

What AI looks at for local recommendations

  • Consistent location and contact data (name, address, phone) across website, Google profile and industry directories
  • LocalBusiness schema that makes service, catchment area and opening hours machine-readable
  • A clear answer to "What do you do for whom, and where?" in the first lines of the homepage
  • Real, findable reviews and mentions in local sources
  • A robots.txt that doesn't lock out AI crawlers like GPTBot and PerplexityBot

The good part: for a clearly defined local business with a clear service and region, the chance of appearing in AI answers is often higher than for an interchangeable large company — provided the signals are right.
